Mankading Controversy: Sehwag And Chopra Give Befitting Reply To English Media

India women vs England Women match ended in controversial fashion when bowler Deepti Sharma ran out the non-striker. She saw Charlotte Dean leaving the crease even before she had released the ball and so she took the bails off to dismiss her and hand India a 16-run win. After the incident, multiple reactions came in with some supporting the decision and some against it. The Official broadcasters for this series called the ending of the game as ‘controversial’. England fast bowlers James Anderson and Stuart Broad criticized the bowler for the way of dismissal. However, Indian fans and some former Indian cricketers hailed Deepti for doing the right thing.

Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag took to social media to give reply to English media accusing Deepti of not playing in the spirit of the game. Sehwag replied in his own funny way sharing an image which had mentioned the laws of cricket. Former Indian cricketer turned commentator Aakash Chopra also came out in Deepti’s support and shared a controversial video of England Women team captain.

Harmanpreet Kaur on Deepti’s dismissal of Charlotte

Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur backed Deepti and said that she has not done anything wrong. As per Harmanpreet, what Deepti did is part of the game and not something outside the rules.

What is Mankading?

In 1947, Former Indian cricketer Vinoo Mankad dismissed Bill Brown twice by dislodging the bails at the non strikers end as batsman had came out of crease before he had released the ball. Vinoo grabbed headlines at that time for violating the spirit of the the game and ‘Mankading’ term began to be used.
However, earlier this year the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), accepted Mankading as a normal mode of running out the non-striker and removed it from Law 41 (Unfair play) and clubbed with Law 38. ICC follows MCC’s law book and according to that this is a legal dismissal, although it was not considered a fair way to dismiss a batter. Now from October 1, this way of dismissal will be called a legitimate run out and a fair one too to dismiss a batter.
