Why India Lost The 3rd Test Against England At Lord’s
Just like the First test, England won the test match from jaws of defeat at the iconic Lords Cricket Ground. India lost the third Test by 22 runs although Ravindra Jadeja fought till the last but he did get much support from other end. England now have a 2-1 lead in the series and will be looking forward to seal the series with another win in fourth Test. Let’s look at some of the major reasons for India’s loss in the third test.
Complete Batting Collapse In Second Innings
One of the main reasons behind India’s defeat is what happened in the second innings. There was a complete batting collapse and India’s batting lineup fell like a pack of cards. India struggled at 112/8 with the top and middle order failing badly. Ravindra Jadeja stood as the lone warrior scoring 61 not out and he managed to build small partnerships with Nitish Kumar Reddy, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj.
Rishabh Pant Run Out
Rishabh Pant’s run out in the first innings on Day 3 turned out to be a game changing moment. Pant, who was batting fluently on 74, attempted a quick single to bring KL Rahul on strike, hoping to help the latter complete his century before lunch. However, Pant was caught short by a brilliant direct hit from Ben Stokes. Pant’s dismissal triggered a collapse from 376/6 to 387 all out, costing India a potential 50-100 run lead that could have been crucial on a deteriorating Lord’s pitch.

Shubman Gill’s Batting Failure
Team India captain Shubman Gill Completely dominated the English bowlers in the first Two Tests. However, England managed to find a way to stop Gill’s incredible run with the bat in the third Test at Lord’s, which eventually proved crucial in their success. Gill made a combined score of 22 runs in both innings. Gill was dismissed for 16 by an outswinger from Chris Woakes in the first innings whereas Brydon Carse removed him for just 6 runs in the second innings at Lord’s.
- Many Extras Conceded
India lost the third test by just 22 runs. One of the major factors in India’s defeat was the extras conceded by the bowlers. The Indian bowlers conceded 31 extras in the first innings and 32 in the second. A total of 63 extras proved costly in a low-scoring chase.
India’s never-ending Misery against the Tailenders
India’s inability to quickly dismiss England tailenders once again cost them a test match. The team’s age-old problem of failing to bowl out the lower order quickly. This had a major impact on the final result of the game.
