Why are Mumbai Indians having the worst season in the IPL?

IPL 2022 is getting from bad to worse for Mumbai Indians till now. Rohit Sharma and his side have now lost seven consecutive matches, which is now a record that no team wants to their name. Mumbai Indians are still at the bottom of the table without having a single point in front of their name. 

The five-time champions Mumbai Indians failed to qualify for the playoffs in the last edition and they are also out of contention this season. This will be the first time since Rohit Sharma’s captaincy era began that MI will fail to qualify for the playoffs in two consecutive IPL seasons. The failure of the Mumbai Indians this season can be attributed to a number of factors.

Non-Reliable Middle-Order

The MI franchise’s middle-order has been not able to finish games. Surya Kumar Yadav and youngster Tilak Varma are the only positives. Kieron Pollard, in particular, has failed to provide valuable innings for his faithful team. Dewald Brewis, also known as Baby AB has played a couple of impressive knocks, but they weren’t enough to win the games.

Weak Pace Attack 

Mumbai Indians’ pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has failed to live up to the potential for the franchise. The yorker specialist has managed to take just 4 wickets in 7 matches. Also, he has not got support from other bowlers. Foreign players like Daniel sams and Tymal Mills have conceded many runs and looked decent in most of the matches. Both the players have an economy rate of more than 11.

Opening players fail to get off to a good start

Ishan Kishan, the most expensive player in the IPL 2022 mega auction with a price tag of 15.25 crores, has fallen short of expectations. MI’s captain Rohit Sharma is also out of form. In fact, he is yet to score a fifty this season. The franchise needs them to play big knocks at the start to set up the platforms for Surya Kumar Yadav, Tilak Varma and Kieron Pollard to finish off the innings whether it’s setting up big totals or chasing targets.

Lack of quality spinner in Mumbai Indians

MI doesn’t have a good spinner who can assist them put pressure on the opponent in the middle overs. In fact, Murugan Ashwin is the only best-known spinner on the team, with West Indian bowler Fabian Allen sitting on the bench. The five-time winners’ choice to let go of Rahul Chahar at mega auctions has turned out to be a bad decision.
