Arjuna Ranatunga calls on the Sri Lankan players in IPL to come back

Arjuna Ranatunga, the 1996 World Cup-winning captain of Sri Lanka, has asked national players competing in the Indian Premier League (IPL 2022) to take a week off and come home to support ongoing demonstrations against growing prices and economic crises.

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak, Sri Lanka’s economy has been falling apart, with tourism and imports suffering the most. Sri Lanka is also facing a monetary crisis that has made it difficult to bring in food and gasoline. Sri Lanka has been forced to reach out to friendly nations for help due to a lack of essential goods.

The economic condition has sparked widespread protests, with Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and President Gotabaya Rajapaksa being called to quit. Massive protests have taken place around the country, and Ranatunga has now asked players to join in the protests.

What did Arjuna Ranatunga say?

Arjuna Ranatunga stated that he does not know, but some players are ignorant that they are playing in the IPL and have not spoken about their country. People, on the other hand, are scared to criticize the administration.

These players also work for the ministry’s cricket board, and they are trying to keep their jobs. They must, however, take action immediately, since other young cricketers have spoken out in favor of the protest. He went on to explain that everyone knows who the IPL players are. He won’t say anything, but he wants them to take a week off work to support the protests.

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa had earlier appealed that people be patient and refrain from taking to the streets in order for the government to settle the problem in a special address to the country on Monday.
