When it comes to the most successful team in IPL history, the Chennai Super Kings is undoubtedly one of the first names that spring to mind. Everyone wants to defeat the Chennai Super Kings, who have performed almost in every tournament since MS Dhoni took over as captain. CSK has appeared in eight IPL finals, four of which it has won. 

Their most recent win came in the IPL 2021 final when they defeated Kolkata Knight Riders by a score of 27 runs. However, in the current season of the IPL, CSK is not performing well as it is standing second last on the table with only two wins in eight matches. Why is CSK not performing well?

Not retaining Faf du Plessis

More notably, the combination of du Plessis and Gaikwad was crucial in CSK’s Cup victory last season. Ruturaj now strives for the rhythm he enjoyed last year. This is a major mistake. He may be a little older, but he’s no stranger to bats. In fact, Faf could have been a better captain than Jadeja. We know the results as he is the new captain of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) who stands in the 5th position on the points table.

Weak Middle-order

CSK has been facing issues in the middle order. Surely, Dhoni has finished a few games for the team, but that is not enough for them to win the trophy. Their new captain, Ravindra Jadeja is also out of form and has not spoken much from his bat till now. Ambati Rayudu has also shown inconsistency in the matches. His last match against PBKS was good as he scored 78 off39 balls. Let’s see if he is back in form or not.

Not buying young talents

In the guise of experience, older players are being targeted rather than younger players. We all saw that at the matches that were played this year, every squad has a young player who shines every day.

No Deepak Chahar

Deepak Chahar’s absence is surely poking the whole team. Chahar was the strike bowler for CSK and he is not playing due to injury. During the mega auction in February, CSK paid INR 14 crore – the highest bidding sum for any player in their auction history – to secure their Indian bowling all-rounder Deepak Chahar.

History of CSK in IPL

CSK finished second in the first two editions of the IPL, closely losing to Rajasthan Royals and Deccan Chargers. They overcome this in 2010 by winning, and they followed it up in 2011 with another victory. They came in second place in 2012 and 2013, and third place in 2014. In 2016, the Chennai Super Kings faced adversity as they were banned from competing for two years.

In 2018, they came with a bang by holding the IPL title. CSK had its worst season ever in 2020, failing to even qualify for the playoffs for the first time. In 2021, they made a strong comeback, winning the league for the fourth time. However, this year is going similar to the 2020 season.
