MS Dhoni’s 5 Biggest Controversies

MS Dhoni is considered one of the most successful and prominent figures in Indian cricket history. Throughout his illustrious career, Dhoni was known  for playing the game with composure although he faced several controversies that raised questions about his decisions and actions both on and off the field.

1. Rift With Seniors
Dhoni was appointed Captain of Indian cricket team in 2007, everything began.  News of Rift started doing the rounds. Ganguly and Dravid were not included in the ODI team for the CB series in Australia and Dhoni was said to be the reason behind it. He asserted that he cannot field Sachin, Sehwag, and Gambhir together as they are slow on the field. After a few months, Sachin finally announced his retirement, and Sehwag and Gambhir were benched due to poor play.

2. Conflict Of Interest
Before 2013 Champions Trophy in England, Dhoni was accused of having stake with Rhiti Sports, who were managing him, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, and Pragyan Ojha. The business refuted the accusations and insisted that he was not a shareholder at the time. Former cricketers expressed concerns about unfair advantages in team selections due to his multiple roles as the captain of the national team and the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL.

3. Accusing Umpire Of Making Wrong Calls Blatantly
It is very rare that Dhoni is seen accusing  the umpire on the field. During IPL 2015 qualifier against Mumbai Indians,Dhoni surprised many when he criticized an umpire’s decision. Following CSK’s 25-run defeat to Mumbai Indians, Dhoni referred to opener Dwayne Smith’s dismissal and called it a “horrible decision”. Due to Dhoni’s “inappropriate public comments” to an umpire’s decision, he was fined 10 per cent of his match fee.

4. Yograj Singh allegations against Dhoni
Cricketer Yuvraj Singh’s father Yograj Singh made strong allegations against Dhoni, claiming he had never seen a worse person than him. Later, Yuvraj had to clarify the situation, and he said that he had always shared a great relationship with Dhoni. But, such public accusations damaged Dhoni’s reputation and led to further debates.

5. Spot Fixing Allegations
In 2013, Chennai Super Kings owners were interrogated over spot-fixing claims. Even Dhoni’s name popped up. Many people Questioned Dhoni’s connections with the franchise and there were allegations of providing false information during the court proceedings. Although, Dhoni maintained his composure, the allegations left a lasting impact on his career.
