A jury ruled on Wednesday in the high-profile defamation case between Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp and his ex-wife Amber Heard. The verdict is in favor of Johnny Depp. A seven-member jury found that Amber Heard had made defamatory claims against her ex-husband.
Johnny Depp won more than $10 million in his libel lawsuit against Amber Heard, which vindicates his stance that Heard fabricated claims that she was abused by Depp in their brief marriage. Also in the case, the jury found in favor of Heard, who alleged that Depp’s lawyer slandered her by calling the allegations of abuse in her case a hoax. The jury awarded her $2 million in damages. These verdicts bring an end to the televised trial in which Depp had hoped it would help restore his reputation. However, it was a spectacle of a vicious marriage.
The two were married in 2015, but before that, both of them dated for years. After a year of marriage, tension began to creep into their relationship and they separated in 2017. The legal battle between them began when Amber accused Depp of domestic violence in an article. Depp then filed a defamation lawsuit.
Johnny Depp expressed his delight at the decision, saying: “the jury gave me my life back”. “From the very beginning, the goal of bringing this case was to reveal the truth, regardless of the outcome,” he said. “The best is yet to come and a new chapter has finally begun,” further said the actor.
The ruling was a setback for women according to Heard, who expressed it as a “disappointed.” “I’m even more disappointed with what this verdict means for other women. It is a setback. It sets back the idea that violence against women is to be taken seriously,” said Amber Heard. She further added that she is “heartbroken” that the evidence she produced was “not enough” to qualify her claims as against Depp’s power and influence.
