Is it the right decision to hold IPL in current situation?

Indian Premier League (IPL) is one of the most awaited cricket tournaments every year. It includes the biggest names in cricket world playing for different franchises and looking to win the prestigeous Title for their team. With the shorter format of the game attracting a large viewership, even the T20 World Cup had been cancelled to pave way for the IPL to be conducted and that too in United Arab Emirates. But recently, some of the players from Chennai Super Kings tested positive for coronavirus and it once again put a question mark on the decision to move forward with IPL 2020 amongst the Pandemic which is taking more lives day by day.

It can be understood that JEE and NEET exams are being held in the current situation but in that career of a lot young students is on the line but as far as IPL goes, it is only for entertainment purpose and risking the players lives in current times does not seem to be the right decision. Even Suresh Raina opted out of this years tournament for some reason or the other.

IPL 13 was initially scheduled to take place earlier this year in March but was postponed due to the rise in the number of coronavirus cases and then the lockdown. The tournament is now going to be held in the UAE, with matches to be played in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah. Like everyone else, the sports industry is also looking to find new ways of increasing their revenues and entertain the fans. But it has to be seen how the experience will be like watching a match with empty stadium. Everyone knows BCCI is the richest cricket board but the loss of one season might not have much of an impact . Even the Title sponsor VIVO pulled out before the tournament.

Will the players be motivated-

It remains to be seen if the players remain motivated and are able to give their best performance with no fans in the stadium and also the fear of COVID-19 on their minds all the time. Also they have to follow certain guidelines and a lot of restrictions have been imposed due to the pandemic. Some fans are eagerly waiting to see their favourite players back on the field after so many months but at what cost. Will these players be excited to play or is it just the big package offered by IPL Franchise due to which they have turned up for the tournament this year? Lets see what happens in the next few days. We hope that unlike CSK, no further cases arise from any of the oher franchise because it is not only frustrating for that particular player but also creates an negative impact on other players who may have come here with a positive mindset.

IPL has been entertaining cricket fans all across the world for last 12 years since its inception. Not only is IPL known for big hitters and close contests, but also for the glamour associated with it. The owners including many bollywood biggies are associated with this tournament and  their are many parties also going on after the matches. So, IPL has sort of brought Bollywood and Cricket together.

There have been many controversies also associated with the IPL over the years including the sacking of its founder Lalit Modi. Modi was served three show-cause notices, which accused him of breaching confidentiality agreements, alleged financial irregularities in broadcast deals and rigging auctions. One of the most heated moments in IPL’s history took place in the very first season when Mumbai Indians player Harbhajan Singh slapped Kings XI Punjab’s S Sreesanth following a post-match argument.. The incident occurred after Kings XI Punjab defeated Mumbai Indians in their former’s home ground Mohali. While the IPL didn’t release the main footage of the incident, a crying Sreesanth was followed by cameras all over the ground. Kolkata Knight Riders co-owner Shah Rukh Khan was banned from the Wankhede stadium for five years after the he was caught in a brawl with security officials at the ground after an IPL match. Just after KKR had won their match against the Mumbai Indians, Sharukh’s children and their friends were seen entering the ground. When the security person attempted to drive them away, Shahrukh got angry and got into a fight. In 2013 IPL spot fixing and betting case arose when the Delhi Police arrested three cricketers, Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan.

But now since the T20 World Cup postponed, there have been many questions raised on the IPL being organized in current situation, putting many players at risk. There will also be no crowd in the stadium and it will be a totally new experience for the cricket fans watching on television without any cheers or shouting going on during the match from the stands. It remains to be seen what kind of response this edition of IPL gets from the viewers and if there is any more controversy still to be seen this year as well.

Although the adequate precautions have been taken. All the teams are put inside the specific Bio-secure bubbles, where no interaction with the Outsiders is allowed but still after what happened with CSK players, there is doubt whether this edition will be successful or not and if everything will go according to plan or not?

Fans have also expressed their anger on the tournament being this year-
