IPL 2022: Qualification Scenario for Teams to qualify for playoffs

The IPL 2022 league stage is down to five matches, and a few teams’ qualifications are still in doubt, and their fate depends on other teams’ results as well.

At this point, Gujarat Titans are confirmed to top the IPL’s group stage, while Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, the two most successful teams in IPL history, are definitely out of the playoffs. There are seven teams still vying for the three remaining slots, but RR and LSG will surely qualify because they have 16 points each and a positive net run rate. So the remaining 5 teams have to fight for the qualification spots.

Here is where each team stands after match No. 65 in IPL 2022

RCB

If RCB wins their last game against GT and DC loses to MI, they’ll be tied with two (LSG) or three (LSG, RR, and DC) teams depending on the outcome of the DC-MI game. Even if they lose their last game, they’ll be tied for fourth with either two (DSR, KKR, and either SRH or PBKS), or three (DSR, KKR, and either SRH or PBKS) other teams. Their net run rate is very bad. That could cost them the playoff spot.

DC

In order to qualify, DC’s best-case scenario would be to win their last match against MI. This would put them tied for second with LSG and RR on 16 points, which they would need to reach the playoffs. Even if they lost their last match to Mumbai Indians, they can still finish joint fourth if GT beat RCB. They will then be in a tie for fourth with two teams (RCB and SRH) or three (RCB, KKR, and SRH or PK). DC has the best chance to qualify among all other teams.

KKR

KKR needs to win their final match against LSG and then hope that GT and MI win against RCB and DC, respectively. This would put them on equal points (14) with three other teams (DC, RCB, and either SRH or PBKS). They don’t have to worry much about the run rate because they have a strong net run rate.

SRH

SRH may qualify if they win their last game against the Punjab Kings and RCB loses to GT. If that happens, then SRH will finish with 14 points and be tied for the fourth position with two (DC, RCB) or three (DC, RCB, and KKR), depending on the outcome of the KKR-LSG match. The net run-rate will play a crucial role.

PBKS

The results of other teams will also affect PBKS‘ chances of finishing in the top four. PBKS needs to win against SRH while hoping that MI defeats DC and GT defeats RCB. In that scenario, they would be on 14 points with two (DC, RCB) or three other teams (DC, RCB, and KKR), depending on who wins the KKR-LSG match.
