IPL 2022: Dhoni won’t be a finisher for CSK?

In the past couple of seasons of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni has not performed well. Besides the IPL, Dhoni has not played any competitive cricket since the 2019 ODI World Cup for India.

After retiring from international cricket in August 2020, Dhoni’s performances for CSK have clearly reflected the lack of cricket played throughout the year. As a result of the lack of competitive cricket in his schedule, he has struggled to perform well on the field and his ability with the willow has waned considerably.

MS Dhoni Lacking Consistency
Dhoni has struggled to score runs regularly in the previous two IPL seasons. Despite averaging 25 runs each game, he only scored 200 runs in the 2020 season. IPL 2020’s 200 runs were disappointing, but IPL 21’s 114 runs were even worse.

Batting Position Change ?
According to Reetinder Sodhi, the CSK skipper’s golden days with the bat are over. Based on the stats, this may be the case. Sodhi feels both CSK and Dhoni would benefit if Dhoni increased his batting position, as his finishing skills are fading away. In the past, Dhoni was the go-to player for Chennai Super Kings, but Sodhi believes Ravindra Jadeja will be the star this time around. Having returned from his shoulder injury, Jadeja has been in great form and just scored his highest score for India against Sri Lanka.

As per Sodhi, MS Dhoni isn’t the same finisher that he was known to be a few years ago. As a result, he should bat higher in the order. It will be easier for him to hit the lusty blows if he takes his time. Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium will host CSK vs Kolkata Knight Riders on March 29.
