David Warner becomes the second player to be stumped on 99

Australian opener David Warner’s innings went in vain as he was dismissed on 99 runs off 112 balls and missed his 19th ODI century by just one run. In the 38th over of the Australian innings against Sri Lanka, Bowler Dhananjay de Silva got him stumped out by wicketkeeper Dickwella. David Warner scored 12 fours in his innings and carried Australia for a long amount of time in the tough chase.

He became the second batsman in the world to be stumped on the score of 99 in ODIs. Before him, India’s VVS Laxman was stumped for 99 against West Indies in the year 2002. Not only that, Warner is the third Australian batsman to be dismissed for 99 in one-day internationals. Matthew Hayden also missed a century by one run in 2001 and Adam Gilchrist in 2003. Sachin Tendulkar is the record holder for missing a century in one-day internationals by one run. He got out three times on the score of 99 runs in ODIs.

As Warner scored 99 runs, he surpassed a special milestone, completing 16000 runs in international cricket. Warner is the sixth Australian player to achieve this feat, following Ricky Ponting, Steve Waugh, Allan Border, Michael Clarke, and Mark Waugh. Ponting has 27368 international runs to his name, the most by an Australian player.

A five-match ODI series is being played between Sri Lanka and Australia. Sri Lanka beat Australia by four runs in the fourth ODI to take an unassailable 3-1 lead in the series. Australia won the toss and opt for bowling. While batting first, Sri Lanka scored 258 runs in 49 overs thanks to Charith Aslanka’s century (110 runs) in the match played at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Tuesday. In reply, the Australian team only managed to score 254 runs in 50 overs. Except for David Warner, all other batsmen failed to score big for the team which cost them the match by a small margin.
