Because of its fast paced nature, it is rare to see big partnerships in T20 cricket. However, there are times when batters form long partnership that completely shifts the momentum. In a T20 match, such big stands not only help the batting team post huge total, but also assures a victory on most occasions. Indian cricket team,which won the T20 World Cup earlier this year has a lineup filled with experienced as well as young stars. Lets take a look at top five highest partnerships put up by Indian batsman in T20I cricket-
Among Indian cricketers, the record for highest partnership is held by Rohit Sharma and Rinku Singh.The duo put up an unbeaten 190-run partnership for the fifth wicket against Afghanistan in 2024. At one stage, India were struggling with a score of 22/4, but Rohit played a sensational innings scoring 121 off just 69 balls while Rinku also contributed with 69 runs from mere 39 balls. India ended up with a total of 212/4 and then Afghanistan ended their chase at the same score. The match result was then decided via a Super Over to see India win the match later.
The second spot is secured by the explosive pair of Sanju Samson and Deepak Hooda. In June 2022, during a match against Ireland, the Indian pair joined forces for a mammoth 176-run stand in just 87 balls for the second wicket. Quite surprisingly, this was the first time that the duo featured as a pair in international cricket and they went on to break Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul’s record of 165-run partnership against Sri Lanka. Hooda impressed everyone as he hammered the bowlers all over the park in his 104 run knock off just 57 balls. On the other hand, Samson contributed with 77 off 42 balls and this partnership helped India post a huge total of 225/7. India won the match by 4 runs and Hooda was adjudged man of the match.
Sanju Samson and Surya Kumar Yadav put up a massive 173-run partnership for the second wicket during the final T20I of Bangladesh’s tour of India in 2024. Initially Bangladesh bowlers started well and dismissed Indian opener Abhishek Sharma for just four runs. Samson completely destroyed the opposition bowlers and powered his way to a 40-ball century, registering the second-fastest hundred by an Indian. Suryakumar also contributed with a 75 run knock off just 35 balls. India posted a record total of 297 and also registered an emphatic 133 run victory.
The destructive pair of KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma entertained the fans during the 2nd T20I against Sri Lanka in 2017. The duo put up an opening stand of 165 runs which included Rohit’s ferocious knock of 118 runs off just 43 balls. Not only did Rohit score a century but he also did it in least no. of balls and set this record in just 35 balls. Rahul’s contribution was also vital as he managed to score 89 off 49 balls. Team India ended their innings with a commanding total of 260/5 and registered a 88-run victory.
In 2023, during India’s tour of West Indies, the crowd saw a blistering 165 run partnership between India’s openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill. Batting first, West Indies posted a decent total of 178/8 in their 20 overs. In reply, India’s openers went all guns blazing. Jaiswal smashed an unbeaten 84 off 51 deliveries and Gill was not far behind with 77 off 47 balls. India won the match with 18 balls remaining and Jaiswal was named Player of the match.
