BCCI considering a policy prohibiting players withdrawing from the IPL

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering enacting a policy prohibiting players withdrawing from the IPL without good reason. Some franchises have expressed their dissatisfaction with the move, therefore it was made.

There was a discussion among the members of the IPL’s Governing Council (GC) at a recent meeting about how to stop a tendency of players to withdraw after being bought for a nominal sum at the auction. According to a GC member, the GC is committed to the league’s key stakeholders, the franchisees. After careful thought, they made a bid for a player. When a player withdraws on spurious grounds, their calculations are thrown off.

Rules won’t be strict

There will be no strict rule banning anyone who has withdrawn from the IPL from playing for a set amount of time from returning. It will be done on a case-by-case basis, with some investigation done first. In most cases, injuries or international obligations are permissible.

Players withdrawing from the IPL

There have been pullouts recently for a variety of reasons. Jason Roy had stated that he wants to spend time with his family and improve his skills. “It only seems appropriate to me that I spend some quality time with my family. Over the next few months, in preparation for a very busy year, I’ll be focusing on myself and my game.” Before pulling out of the Gujarat Titans team, the English opener remarked. He was purchased for INR 2 crore as his starting price. Hales, who was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for INR 1.5 crore, claimed he needed time to recharge and also mentioned bubble fatigue.

Pull-outs of players are not uncommon in the IPL. Mitchell Starc had done it before, after being selected in different auctions by Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders. The BCCI has taken into account the possibility that the Australia fast bowler was forced to retire by his board. The IPL GC recognized that in certain cases, the player may have little choice. Starc, for the record, did not register for the 2022 auction due to bubble fatigue.
